Love is one of the strongest emotions known to bind people of all ages, races and creeds.

In the Philippines, one of the most celebrated occasions is Valentine's Day during which love is expressed in so many ways. Among the enduring ways to express one's love is through love letters and greeting cards sent and received here and abroad. Receiving one during Valentine's Day triggers shivers of excitement. The feeling of being loved and remembered on this special day will be felt more intensely if the message of love of the sender is known to the recipient even before the mail is opened.

For Valentine's Day 2002, a set of four (4) colorful, cheery and distinctively Filipino stamps will be issued for this special day for lovers:

1. "I Love You in Nine Dialects" - In the Philippines, love can be expressed in many languages. Springing out of an envelope is this endearing message in nine (9) predominant languages in the Philippines: Tagalog - "Maha/ Kita" lIocano - "Ay-ayaten ka"; Pampango - "Kaluguran daka"; Bicolano - "Namumuot ako sa imo"; Cebuano - "Hinigugma kita"; Hiligaynon - "Pa/angga ko ikaw"; Maranaw - "Pekabebayaan ko sika"; Waray - "Hinigugma ko ikaw"; and Pangasinense - "/nararo taca".

2. Love Beyond Religion - Cute caricatures of a man clad in typical Muslim costume and a woman dressed in a traditional baro't saya  framed by a heart underscores that love can blossom even among individuals of different religious beliefs.

3. Love among God's Creatures - Cats and dogs are universally known to be natural enemies but these pets, when raised together in  love, exemplifies the universality of love among God's creatures.

4. Love Flying in the Air - Love knows no geographic boundaries. It flourishes even among people across nations. This is artistically
presented through a passenger air balloon studded with hearts set over stripes of different colors.

Angels are not just metaphors or symbols. Their existence has been proven several times in the Bible, the Old and the New Testaments. They have no bodies but they live to do God's will. In the Old Testament, angels are messengers for God as they continue to do in the New Testament. Angels are created beings and however close to God and faithful intermediaries they are, with the coming of Christ in the New Testament, they are not equal to Him. As Christ is God, they do his will. Like superhuman beings, angels descend to earth at God's behest to intervene in the affairs of humans. They speak, they are seen, they are touched, and sometimes, they even wrestled with. Angels were assigned the role of protecting the new born infant. And when Jesus was to start his journey to Mount Calvary in the Garden of Gethsemane, He chided St. Peter and said to him: "Do you think I cannot appeal to my Father and He will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?" meaning of course that if He needed protection the way St. Peter intended it, He could easily call on the Angels. Angels must be light as the clouds and often times we envision them to be walking on them. However, form, with wings included, they are described, the church reminds us that Angels are pure spirits.

The Golden Garuda of Palawan - Dating back to the 14th Century, A.D., the Garuda, a golden image of an eagle found at Brooke's Point, Palawan, was believed to be the vehicle of the Hindu God, Vishnu at the height of power of the Hindi-inspired Madjapahit Empire. This image along with other artifacts and the Filipino words of Sanskrit origin are testaments of Hindu influence in pre-colonial Philippine society.

Sunrise at Pusan Point - Located at the easternmost part of the Philippines, Pusan Point in Davao Oriental, was the site of the first millennium sunrise in the country and is considered a "once-in-a-lifetime" event, the sunrise being a symbol of hope in the new era.

The Golden Tara of Agusan - This 21 karat solid gold figurine of a sitting female deity was recoveredfrom a riverbank inAgusan and is probably one of the most unique of pre-colonial artifacts of the Philippines as it was said to be a Buddhist Tara with Tantric influences which dates back from the 11thto the 14th century.

With the successful staging of World Cup 2002 still reverberating in the Korean Peninsula, PHILAKOREA 2002 comes as "Culture World Cup," created amidst the philatelic spirit of "love, harmony, participation, and progress." PHILAKOREA 2002 World Stamp Exhibition "represents the enrichment of our daily lives through the pursuit of the serene pleasure of a hobby that all family can enjoy together."

This year's World Stamp Exhibition will be participated by 150 countries and it opens on August 2, 2002. The world will get to see the impressive progress of Asian exhibits and exhibitors at large. PHILAKOREA 2002 will also host the 67th FIP Congress.

The souvenir sheets come with two backdrops: gold for the imperforates and red for the perforates. Gold signifies rarity that is found in life's most serene state and red, the vibrant energy extracted from one's state of happiness. It is in one's most serene state that one can find true happiness.

The image of Gautama Buddha with a World Peace Tower Stupa in the background imparts Buddha's universal message of peace, non-violence, compassion, and wisdom as summarized in the "Four Noble Truths" and "Eightfold Path." The lotus represents the preservation of purity amidst adversities.  And the image of tranquil waters nibbling the mangroves is a picture of the most simple and peaceful existence any person would like to live by, devoid of the complexities of life.

If we have to relate the two images to philately, one can simply draw out their relevance. Like the quiet waters that cross the lotus and the mangroves, philately follows the flow of "serene pleasure" of indulgence in the hobby.

The 60-centavo national tree (narra) was issued in 1993 as part of the national symbol definitive series. This surcharged stamp is to complement the increase in international postage rates since December 1, 2001, by combining the three-peso with other denominations for the different postal rates. The 60-centavo denomination is too small to be used as postage in the light of increased postal rates through the years.
