In a Basilica Minore atop a hill overlooking the Chico River, the image of our Blessed Mother is specially venerated under the title "Our Lady of the Holy Rosary". In 1604, the sons of St. Dominic brought the revered image from Macau, China to the ancient city of Lallo-c, Cagayan, which was then the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Nueva Segovia.
The Holy Father has paid tribute to the maturing faith of the people of Cagayan and their respective filial devotion to Mary by conceding to the Shrine of Our Lady of Piat, the title of Basilica Minore or Minor Basilica. On June 20, 1999, the Basilica was inaugurated in solemn ceremonies led by the Papal legate Antonio Cardinal Javierre Ortas and Archbishop Antonio Franco, the Papal Nuncio to the Philippines.
This year marks the Golden Jubilee of the founding of the Liceo de Cagayan University. Founded in 1955 by the late Atty. Rodolfo N. Pelaez of Cagayan de Oro City and his wife, Elsa P. Pelaez of Cebu City, the Liceo offers a wide scope of faculties and programs, among others: the College of Arts and Sciences, Education, Commerce, Engineering, Law, Information Technology, Nursing, Criminology, Radiologic Technology, Physical Therapy, Graduate Studies and Basic Education Department.
This is the first time that the' World Meeting of Families will be held in Asia. The first was held in Rome (1994) during the Year of the Family, the second in Rio de Janeiro (1997), and the third in Rome (2000) in the framework of the Jubilee of Families.
It is significant that the Fourth World Meeting of Families will be held in the Philippines, the only Catholic country in Asia, which is home to about two: thirds of the world population. However, Christians in Asia comprised only three percent of the entire continent's population. Thus, a great majority of Asian people has yet to hear and meet Jesus, making Asia a vast mission field for evangelization. Apart from being a missionary recipient, Asia has much to offer the world especially in the way it values families as a great treasure. All these boils down to this year's theme: "The Christian Family: Good News for the Third Millennium."
