With a total upstream and downstream investment portfolio of around US$4.5 billion, the Malampaya Deep Water Gas to Power project is the largest investment to date in the country. The gas reservoir, situated some 80 kilometres offshore northwest Palawan, is about 3,000 metres below sea level, making the project one of the frontier deep water developments in the world.

The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), the country’s lead agency in rice science and development, will celebrate its 25 years today, Nov. 5, focusing on Rice Science for Development (S4D).

With S4D as its rallying call for five to ten years, PhilRice’s medium and long-term corporate plans centered on helping to attain and sustain rice self-sufficiency, reducing poverty and malnutrition, and achieving competitiveness in agricultural science and technology.

Based at Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, PhilRice has been responding to the rice farmers’ needs and the country’s endeavors to attain rice self-sufficiency since the Institute’s creation in Nov. 5, 1985.

Other than helping the country achieve rice self-sufficiency, an external review on PhilRice’s impact revealed that for each peso invested on the Institute, a net return or benefit of P4.45 for the Philippine economy was gained.

On July 12, 1980, the country’s president, Ferdinand E. Marcos, created the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) as a government agency. The Chairman was the then First Lady and Governor of Metro Manila, Imelda Romualdez Marcos. This LRTA confined its activities to determining policies, to the regulation and fixing of fares, and to the planning of extensions to the system. The project was called Metrorail and was operated by a sister company of the former tramway company Meralco, called Metro, Inc.

At about 10:35 in the morning of 17th December, 1903 Orville Wright made the first powered flight in a fully controllable aircraft, which the Wright brothers designed and developed. The flight lasted just 12 seconds and stretched only 120 feet. In the next few hours however, Wilbur and Orville made four flights, the longest was 852 feet. After the fourth flight, a gust of wind rolled the aircraft over and smashed it.

On March 14, 1903, the Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company (MERALCO) was incorporated in the State of New Jersey. The incorporation followed Ordinance No. 44 of the Municipal Board of Manila, which was passed on March 24, 1903, granting Detroit entrepreneur Charles M. Swift a franchise "to operate an electric street railway service and to furnish electric current for light, heat, and power in the city and its suburbs ..." Thus began a saga of service - moving people in tranvias and autobuses for over four decades and providing electric power for ten decades.
